My interests concern the physiology and ecology of marine phytoplankton. My students and I have been working on problems relating to control of productivity in several estuaries adjacent to the eastern Gulf of Mexico including Apalachicola Bay and Ochlokone Bay. Factors such as salinity, temperature, freshwater flushing time, nutrient chemistry, and herbivory interact in these estuaries to control phytoplankton productivity. We are also working on factors controlling dinoflagellate bioluminescence.
